Member Company NextEra™ Energy Resources, Helps ACORE Carbon Balance Conferences

With a mission of supporting an industry that is in the business of building clean energy and reducing carbon emissions, it is important for ACORE to share the same goals. Faced with the carbon impacts associated with holding our conferences, we turned to a member company for help. NextEra™ Energy Resources, America’s largest producer of renewable energy helps companies, organizations and local governments balance their carbon emissions using certified renewable energy and carbon offset products from their world-class portfolio of wind and solar power facilities. Through their new EarthEra program, 100% of the revenue is then used to build more renewable energy. "We are concerned about the environmental impact our large gatherings produce," said Dawn Butcher, (Director of Event Planning and Marketing, ACORE)."We are fortunate to have a member company such as NextEra™ Energy Resources to help us assess and mitigate the carbon footprint of these important meetings.”

“The greening of events is not a trend; it is a way of doing business that is here to stay. By reducing our events’ carbon footprint, ACORE is demonstrating that there is a direct correlation between renewable energy and mitigating the effects of climate change. Programs such as the EarthEra program give renewable energy a stronger direct role in simultaneously strengthening our economy, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels and combating the challenges we face as a country with climate change,” stated Tom Weirich, Director of Membership & Corporate Relations, ACORE.

NextEra™ Energy Resources will balance the carbon emissions associated with ACORE’s upcoming Phase II's event space and the RETECH 2010 convention space.

The innovative EarthEra program takes a “Balance and Build” approach. Corporations, institutions, colleges and consumers participate by purchasing EarthEra renewable energy and offset products to balance carbon emissions of various activities. Every penny of revenue is then directed to the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust where 100% of the funds are used to build new renewable energy facilities. Since inception, the Trust has commitments of over $22 million and support from important environmental groups. Corporate Trust partners include Office Depot, HSBC, Dell, Starbucks, National Geographic, Citi and Sony, among others.

Launched on April 1, 2009, the EarthEra™ Renewable Energy Trust was founded by NextEra as a way to engage with business and private citizens to accelerate renewable energy development.  With the establishment of the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust, NextEra is accelerating the process of clean energy expansion, by involving businesses and consumers who previously had no way of participating in renewable energy project development.

The program’s next phase of outreach involves partnering with retail brands and services to integrate EarthEra into the consumer experience. These include partnerships with VivaTerra.com (an eco-chic catalog), Wine.com (EarthEra is embedded in their “Eco-Wine Gift Set“), and Gazelle.com (an electronics recycling company offers customers an EarthEra shipping offer).

In the coming months and years, NextEra Energy will be a valuable member of ACORE, as both organizations pursue the same primary goal—promoting the development of renewable energy in America.
